Il pane, alimento basico per gli esseri umani, è diventato un alimento con un alto potenziale di valore sacro e trascendente che le religioni hanno amplifcato secondo le loro caratteristiche. Le religioni abramitiche (ebraismo, cristianesimo ed islamismo) rivelano l'importanza di questo cibo, che ne ha sempre fatto simbolo di vita, dal signifcato spirituale per la crescita della persona stessa, e alimento dello spirito, dell'intelligenza e delle emozioni.
Il pane è un elemento fondamentale per la celebrazione eucaristica, ma è anche ricordo dell’antica festa delle primizie, quando si faceva il nuovo lievito con il nuovo raccolto. È il ricordo della fuga dall’Egitto e frutto del lavoro dell'uomo, in realtà dono di Dio, e che quindi non è da sprecare o da gettare in modo assoluto.
Il pane spezzato, condiviso, moltiplicato è segno di amicizia, di fratellanza, di condivisione, di convivialità ma cosa succede quando gli uomini che vivono nella stessa terra, coltivano le stesse piante e mangiano lo stesso pane, fanno invece crollare tutti questi valori tradizionali che hanno in comune?
I simboli ricamati su ogni pane azzimo invitano a riflettere sul conflitto e la difficoltà di convivenza che da sempre dividono Palestina e Israele.
Quanto tempo ci vorrà ancora affnché questo pane torni ad essere il pane di vita?

Bread, the basic food for human beings, has become a food with high potential of sacred and transcendent value that religions have amplified according to their characteristics. Abrahamic religions (Hebraism, Christianity and Islamism) reveal the importance of this food, which has always been a symbol of life, with a spiritual meaning for personal growth and nourishment for spirit, intelligence and feelings.
Bread is a crucial element for the Eucharistic celebration, but it is also a memory of the ancient festival of firstlings, when new yeast was made using the new harvest. It is the memory of the flight into Egypt and the fruit of man’s labour, actually a gift from God, and hence must absolutely not be wasted or thrown away.
Broken, shared and multiplied bread is a sign of friendship, brotherhood, sharing and conviviality, but what happens when the men who live on the same planet, grow the same crops and eat the same bread, instead shatter all these traditional values that they have in common?
The symbols embroidered on each piece of unleavened bread invite one to reflect on conflict and on the difficulty of cohabitation that has always divided Palestine and Israel.
How much longer until this bread becomes once again the bread of life?
